The Ilmtal Cycle Path, a charming route in the heart of Thuringia, takes you on a picturesque journey along the Ilm River. Over a length of about 123 kilometers, you follow the gently meandering river from its source in the Thuringian Forest to its confluence with the Saale at Großheringen.

Your adventure begins in Allzunah, a small village in the Thuringian Forest, where the Ilm springs. From there, the cycle path leads you through a diverse landscape, past dense forests, open meadows, and idyllic villages. The route through the Ilmtal captivates with its natural beauty and tranquility.

Along the way, you will discover numerous cultural and historical treasures. A highlight is the city of Weimar, famous for its classical heritage and as the workplace of Goethe and Schiller. In Weimar, you can visit the UNESCO World Heritage sites, including the Goethe and Schiller houses, and immerse yourself in the atmosphere of this significant cultural city.

Further along, the Ilmtal Cycle Path takes you through the charming Bad Berka, past the picturesque Hohenfelden reservoir and through the delightful Kranichfeld. The route mostly runs alongside the Ilm and offers you frequent opportunities to observe the rich flora and fauna of the valley.

In Bad Sulza, known for its thermal baths, you can take a relaxing break before continuing your journey along the Ilmtal. The path eventually leads you to the mouth of the Ilm into the Saale, where your tour comes to an end.

The Ilmtal Cycle Path is well signposted and mostly offers flat and easily navigable paths, making it ideal for cyclists of all experience levels. Along the route, there are numerous inns and cafés inviting you to linger and offering regional specialties.
